Chiropractic medicine is a treatment concentrated on the neuromusculoskeletal system of the body. The proper functioning of this system is what the chiropractor always seeks to attain. The wellness of the nervous system is essential for the preservation of health.
Chiropractic medicine was founded in 1895 by Daniel David Palmer. Since then, it became a popular form of treatment for neuromusculoskeletal injuries and ailments in the United States. Chiropractic is good for the treatment of injuries, such as whiplash, sciatica, arthritic pain, back injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome and even headaches, among others. Chiropractors basically work in adjusting the spine to its normal working order since the spine is where muscle, joint and nerve function get their stimulation.
Chiropractors locate subluxations on the spine. Subluxations are vertebral misalignments that cause nerves to function inefficiently. Left alone, these subluxations can cause further severe degenerative spine disorders.
For subluxations, chiropractic adjustments are usually applied. There are 55 chiropractic adjustments and the chiropractor normally would select the best type per case. It is not rare, however that the chiropractor would use two or more techniques, when addressing the same condition on the same patient. The most commonly used technique in chiropractic medicine is the spinal adjustment. Spinal adjustments are utilized when limited range of motion is manifested by the body part.
Spinal adjustment is done by moving a joint beyond its usual range of motion (which is restricted due to injury and pain) albeit not going beyond the normal range of motion the joint is expected to do. Usually, this technique is accompanied by a popping or cracking noise as the joint is manipulated.
To be a licensed chiropractor, one must finish three to four years of college (over 4800 hours of training) taking up courses in chiropractic medicine. After graduation the passing of a state board chiropractic exam and registration to the General Chiropractic Council are required to make one a certified chiropractic professional.
When finding a chiropractor, be sure to find one with proper credentials like graduating from a reputable school and being a member of a good accrediting organization. Be sure the chiropractor is a member of the General Chiropractic Council and has good references. Asking your healthcare provider for a good chiropractor helps a lot in terms of reference.
Upon consultation, the chiropractor would check your vital signs, study your medical history and do some more physical examinations before he/she determines the diagnosis and/or whether chiropractic is the best treatment for your sickness. When chiropractic treatment is viable, the first thing the chiropractor does is to treat your pain since this is the usual chief complaint of the patient. After treatment, medications may be prescribed to again mitigate the pain. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatories or NSAIDS are usually prescribed for pain neuromusculoskeletal pain.
