The symptoms of COPD or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease can be reduced through acupuncture treatment, a study shows.
COPD is an umbrella term that refers to a number of chronic lung diseases including asthmatic bronchitis, asthma, emphysema and chronic bronchitis. COPD is a form of lung condition in which the air passages of the lungs are obstructed or damaged making breathing very difficult. While emphysema and chronic bronchitis may develop separately, patients usually experience both conditions at the same time.
A new study showed that in 70 patients with COPD, those who received placebo and real acupuncture for three months once a week experienced a significant improvement in the breathing as measured in the Borg scale after walking for six minutes straight.
The conductors of the study discovered that after three months, the group given real acupuncture had better resolution of shortness of breath compared to the placebo group. Moreover, the group given real acupuncture showed much better walking during a walk test conducted after the end of three months.
It was shown in the end that acupuncture can indeed help COPD patients by treating shortness of breath.
Several other integrative treatments have been researched for their potential in helping patients suffering from COPD. It was shown that combining massage therapy and acupressure can help relieve anxiety and labored breathing in COPD patients who have been in mechanical ventilator support for a long time. Other studies have also shown that aromatherapy can help clear mucosal accumulation in COPD patients.
