Acupuncture for Hair Loss, Does it Work?

Even certain hair experts would agree that acupuncture can somehow help stop hair loss. Acupuncture boosts blood flow to the scalp and this adds to the nourishment of the hair follicles thus preventing hair from falling off the scalp.

How does Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncture works by inserting extremely thin acupuncture needles at certain points in the body known as acupuncture points or acupoints, for short. The main idea behind acupuncture involves the existence of vital energy which the Chinese refer to as qi (pronounced chee). This qi is the force that enables us to breathe, eat, walk and talk. When qi becomes deficient, imbalanced, or blocked, sickness develops. Acupuncture boosts blood and qi circulation all over the body, enabling it to function at its optimum.

Hair Growth and Acupuncture

Based on the belief of acupuncturists and traditional Chinese medicine practitioners, hair quality is related to the amount of kidney and blood energy and qi that is in the body. The nourishment of the hair is regulated by the kidney and when a person lacks the right amount of kidney and blood energy and qi, hair loss is likely to happen. With acupuncture the flow of these three essential substances are boosted strengthening the kidneys and thus restoring the normal development of hair. The application of acupuncture needles right into the scalp boosts circulation there which stimulates the regeneration of hair.

Techniques

In an acupuncture procedure the practitioner inserts several or a few needles at certain predetermined acupoints in the body. This causes the energy channels to be activated improving the flow of blood and qi in these channels (called meridians) and helping tonify the kidneys.

Herbs, Supplements and Diet

The acupuncturist can give advices about what Chinese herbs, supplements to use as well as what dietary changes need to be implemented. In 2004, a study was published by the Shanghai Journal of Acupuncture and Moxibustion in which an 83% rate of cure was achieved in 110 people who were all suffering from a hair loss condition known as alopecia. Acupuncture along with a Chinese herb known as astralagus was used in the study.

Importance of Finding a Licensed Acupuncturist

Almost all the states in the Union require a license in order to practice acupuncture in the state he intends to practice his profession. Training and education requirements for licensing may differ from state to state. To be sure that you are being treated by a licensed practitioner check with your local health department to see what the requirement is for licensing in that state.
